Joint Mobilization

Joint mobilization, similar to, but less forceful than manipulation is a hands on technique performed by a physical therapist to increase joint range of motion and decrease painful movement of the joint. During this technique the patient’s joint surfaces are passively glided across each other in an attempt to increase movement of the joint. Gentle joint traction may also be used during this technique to aid in increasing mobility and stretching of the joint capsule. There are various grades and types of mobilizations that are used to treat many different joints in the body including the spine, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, pelvis, knee and foot.
